IEEE Spectrum Magazine Ranks NetLogic Microsystems Among the Top 10 Semiconductor Companies with the Most Powerful Patent Portfolios First Annual IEEE Spectrum Survey Evaluated Over a Thousand Organizations Within 15 Industry Categories for the Most Influential Patent Portfolios Mountain View, Calif. Dec. 18, 2006 NetLogic Microsystems, Inc. [NASDAQ: NETL], the leader in the design and development of knowledge-based processors, today announced that it has been recognized by IEEE Spectrum magazine’s first annual patent survey as having one of the top 10 most powerful patent portfolios in the semiconductor industry for 2006. The IEEE Spectrum is the flagship publication of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the world's largest professional technology association. Patents issued in 2005 to over 1,000 companies were analyzed for IEEE Spectrum by 1790 Analytics, a research firm that specializes in analyzing patent citations, to determine the patent “Pipeline Power” of each company’s patent portfolio. The Pipeline Power score is a measure of the overall strength and quality of a company’s patent portfolio instead of the mere quantity of patents a company acquires. It reflects the impact of a company’s intellectual property on the industry as a whole, the originality of the innovations, the growth in the number of patent grants, and the diversity of technologies upon which the patent portfolio is built. NetLogic Microsystems ranked first in “Pipeline Originality,” second in “Pipeline Impact” and tenth in the overall “Pipeline Power” in the survey’s semiconductor manufacturing category. Other semiconductor industry leaders that were recognized by IEEE Spectrum in the same category included Broadcom, Intel, Micron Technology, Sandisk Corporation, Texas Instruments and Xilinx. The Pipeline Originality score measures the variety of technologies upon which an organization’s patents build, based on the concept that inventions created by combining ideas from several different technologies tend to be more original than those that make incremental improvement upon the same technology. The Pipeline Impact score shows how frequently patents issued in 2005 cite a company’s patents issued from 2000 through 2004. This metric is based on citations both from the organization itself and from other organizations. It reflects both the extent to which a company is developing its own technology and the impact of its technology on others in the industry. “We are honored to be named with the likes of Intel and Broadcom as one of the most patent-savvy companies in the industry,” said Dimitrios Dimitrelis, vice president of engineering at NetLogic Microsystems. “This recognition is a testament to our employees’ dedication to innovation and technology leadership.” |
