Ultra Low-Power Embedded Processor Family

NetLogic Microsystems’ industry-leading Alchemy® Processor family comprises a series of ultra low-power embedded processors that deliver the powerful processing performance, ultra low-power functionality and market specific integration required for next-generation products like enterprise thin clients, automotive infotainment, telematics, and other media rich embedded applications.

Our Ultra Low-Power Embedded processor cores are based on the standard MIPS® processor instruction set. However, we take advantage of our core microprocessor design heritage and expertise and significantly optimize our processor core architecture and implementation. We utilize very low power microprocessor design techniques and utilize low voltage and low leakage cell libraries, which allow us to incorporate high power efficient cores in our chips. Given the importance of power efficiency, our Alchemy® Processor family implements some of our most advanced low power design techniques.

The Ultra Low-Power Embedded processors utilize clock-gating, 4-way set associative Data Cache, no speculative execution, fast branch resolution and a tightly coupled system bus to reduce the power consumption. Our design also implements power saving techniques such as stopping the CPU clock upon a WAIT instruction and switching the system bus clock frequency under low bandwidth requirements. Other components, such as our memory controller, can determine when to automatically enable configurable DDR memory power management, thus saving significant power at the system level. In addition, our LCD controller’s 8Kb palette RAM can be loaded with low-resolution images and used as a frame buffer to support static display images in power-saving modes. This enables LCD refreshes to occur out of palette RAM while DDR is put in self-refresh, thereby reducing total system power consumption while still allowing image display at required resolutions.

NetLogic Microsystems’ Ultra Low-Power Embedded processor family are high-performance, low power processors capable of addressing media intensive applications. Along with the Au1300®, the Au1200® family of media processors includes the Au1200®, the Au1210® and the Au1250® products.
