The Solution for Next Generation Media
Overview
NetLogic Microsystems’ industry-leading Alchemy® Processor family comprises a series of ultra low-power embedded processors that deliver the powerful processing performance, ultra low-power functionality and market specific integration required for next-generation products like enterprise thin clients, automotive infotainment, telematics, and other media rich embedded applications.
NetLogic Microsystems' ultra low-power Alchemy® Au1300® Processor family continues the commitment and experience gained from the success of the industry leading Alchemy Au1200® Processor family. Building on this success, the Au1300 Processor family extends the performance, enriches the media experience and reduces overall system power. The Alchemy Au1300 Processors introduces significant improvements in performance, media playback and lower power consumption while preserving the software investment from the Alchemy Au1200 Processor family.
The Au1300 Processors provide on-chip decoding of leading digital media formats including H.264, MPEG 1/2/4, DivX, XviD, WMV9 and VC-1, without the need for transcoding.
The MIPS32® compliant architecture runs at clock speeds of up to 800MHz to maximize the performance, processing capability and available MIPS for the Au1300 Processors. This is made possible by a highly efficient system bus architecture capable of providing the necessary bandwidth for intensive applications, such as 2D/3D applications with simultaneous video decode without a significant impact on overall system performance.
Key Technologies
Enhanced Media Acceleration Engine® (MAE2) with Bit Stream Accelerator (BSA)
NetLogic Microsystems’ second generation Media Acceleration Engine includes a Bit Stream Accelerator (BSA) that off-loads intensive processing tasks from the Au® core. This advanced technology allows for HD video decode with minimal impact on the CPU core, keeping abundant resources available for use with other advanced or processing intensive applications.
Integrated 2D/3D Graphics Acceleration
A high performance Graphics Processing Engine (GPE) within the Au1300 Processor enables 3D graphics processing, and allows for development of more complex 3D navigation and gaming applications, as well as a richer, more powerful user interface. The Au1300 Processors support OpenGL ES 1.1/2.0 and OpenVG 1.1 standards and can processes up to 10M polygons per second.
Power Management
The Au1300 Processor family includes scalable clocking that allows dynamic variability of the CPU frequency to lower processor power consumption based on the specific needs of the applications. The flexible clocking scheme employed by the Au1300 Processors allows the CPU, MAE and GPE blocks to operate at independent frequencies, enabling fine-tuning of the system based on specific application and software requirements. The Au1300 Processors implement voltage islands for the GPE and MAE2, eliminating wasteful current leakage from these blocks when not in use. Additionally, extensive clock gating is used in the processors to automatically disable the clocks on unused blocks.
