Evaluation Board for the NetLogic Microsystems XLS2xx Processor® Family
Evaluation Board Overview
The XLS Processor® LiTE evaluation board is a comprehensive platform that provides a vehicle for rapid evaluation of the XLS2xx Processors. Additionally, the LiTE platform was developed such that the design collateral (BOM, Schematics, Layout, etc.) can provide developers with a basis for the rapid system development tailored to their specific requirements.
NetLogic Microsystems' XLS Processor® family expands on the success of the XLR Processor® product line by offering mid-to entry-level derivative versions of the powerful Multi-Core, Multi-Thread architecture. The XLS Processor Family leverages XLR's Multi-Threaded cores, Fast Messaging Network™ (FMN), high-speed point-to-point distributed memory and I/O interconnects, autonomous acceleration, scalability, and innovation, while extending software compatibility throughout both product families and addressing applications where Printed Circuit Board (PCB) real estate and power are scarce. The XLS Processor Family supports a rich set of features and integration with unprecedented power and performance for systems developed for communication and telecommunication, enterprise LAN (wireless and wired), and SMB networking applications. These solutions include integrated security appliances, wireless Access Points and switches, ATCA and AMC service cards, secure wireless and wireline routers and switches, telecom media gateways, radio controllers, and network signaling devices.
The combination of dense computational performance, security acceleration, (de)compression acceleration and network awareness makes the XLS processors an exceptional answer for these embedded low power solutions. For more information on the XLS processor, refer to the NetLogic Microsystems XLS processor Family Product Brief.
The XLS LiTE evaluation board is populated with the XLS208 processor, which represents a robust performance offering in the XLS2xx product family. It features a convenient reduced form factor and provides key DDR2, Gigabit Ethernet, PCIe, USB,Flash memory, and diagnostic interfaces.
The LiTE system is supported by a comprehensive SDK that contains reference and a production-ready software kit, including device drivers for open source Linux and other commercial operating systems, complete tool chains, diagnostics, and NetLogic Microsystems firmware suite. NetLogic Microsystems' SDK enables customers to quickly develop or migrate existing software to easily designed, high-performance, feature-rich solutions.

Firmware
NetLogic Microsystems includes the XLS firmware environment (bootloader), which enables initialization of the multiple XLS Processor® virtual CPUs (threads) and all peripherals. Key peripheral support includes L2 cache, Fast Message Network™, EthernetMACs, Security Engine, Compression Engine, PCIe, DDR2memory controller, dual USB ports and dual UARTs. The XLS firmware also provides for offline diagnostics and enables the evaluation board to boot operating systems from the network or on-board Flash.
Operating System Support
The XLS Processor® family ATX evaluation board is initially enabled by two standard operating systems including 32-bitLinux 2.6 with complete support for the XLS processor. Full source code is available and SMP support is standard. Customers will have early access to NetLogic Microsystems' kernel improvements. In addition, VxWorks® from Wind River is supported.
Development Tools
NetLogic Microsystems supports the industry-standard GNU compiler tool chain with an GCC compiler optimized for the XLS Processor® and a MIPS cross-compile tool chain for x86/Linux. In addition, the XLS processor is supported by the Multi-Thread-aware Corelis Code Runner™ source level debugger and complete family of JTAG controllers. The USB interface for controlling the JTAG is built into the system. NetLogic Microsystems also provides an optional Linux-based XLS debugger.
